The colors may never get 'perfect' but they can look just fine. If you live in Europe or Japan you might get lucky and have a set that has a RGB SCART port on it, which is just as good. I used to have a link to a page that had some nice screen shots of the various display methods and filters, but I just can not find it right now. The filters in MAME do not look right to my eyes, plus most of them are real performance killers. Things like color shifts coded into them to account for the display short comings, etc.
Thing being that most of these games where designed to display on a 15 KHz standard resolution arcade monitor and they just do not look right on anything else. And I would say 'meh' to that type of setup versus a real high definition display, presentation monitor, or projector.
